this is an email i received from ayah earlier today, which made my smile superwide:

"Today adik made history. mak bought all the
ingredients of the sizzling mee and got him to
help mak cook the gravy for dinner.

He started eating 2 bunches of mee in a row. He
then rested, took a breather and then took 2
more bunches !!! The gravy was complete with
chicken, mushroom, vege, etc. This happened
1/2 hour ago. He was in a way shocked that
he was eating it home-cooked, but as a matter
of habit, still asked for chili atas pan !

I told mak I'll e-mail this message to the
both of you because its so hilarious."

i think the reason i smiled was because this isn't usually how my family runs, and certainly isn't how my father is, he's rarely ever this spontaneous or humorous. but its exactly how i am. how i always get excited over the most trivial of matters, and often need to express it to someone, usually someone who i assume would not be irritated over the mention of said matter.

maybe its the unusual act of justifying the way one really is. maybe its in recognizing who we are in the people who shaped who we've become. maybe its just acknowledging that that part of you was not all you, but something that came from the way you grew up, and how people around you interacted. maybe its just the need to show to the world that this is the way i am, and this is the way my family works, and yes, it may be different, but it is the only way i've known it to be, and the way i've known to love.

or maybe, its that ayah is showing me that there's still so much curiosity in the world, and its the one thing we should never, ever, ever be ashamed of. life's much to short and interesting to be held back by being indifferent. anyone who has told or taught me otherwise has lost my respect. and thanks to the fact that i know so many people who do this, geramness is now bursting out of me.

and oh, no cat was killed during the process.
